Slíglas

WestBIC is an Enterprise Ireland partner providing hands-on startup support, funding readiness and investment preparation for early-stage founders in the west of Ireland.

Slíglas is a Sligo based climate start-up, established in 2024. The business removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by creating biochar. This is done by pyrolysing biomass that would otherwise decompose into carbon dioxide, instead creating a stable structure that locks carbon away for millennia. By putting biochar back in the ground, the process is the exact reverse of fossil fuel extraction. Slíglas was founded in response to our rapidly changing climate. With global emissions still trending upwards, carbon removal is set to become a key tool in the drive towards net zero.

Key supports received during start-up process & the role WestBIC played

Slíglas followed the Irish start-up roadmap, and WestBIC was extremely helpful throughout. A feasibility study was first conducted with Sligo LEO before Slíglas took part on the New Frontiers Programme. Slíglas received PSSF funding from Enterprise Ireland at the conclusion of New Frontiers and WestBIC were instrumental in supporting on the application. In addition to numerous reviews and the practical advice offered when filling out forms, WestBIC was also able to support the business behind the application, advising on key milestones to pursue and how to position for long term success. It was really valuable to have input from a team that has seen it all before and can quickly steer you in the right direction.

Future Plans

Slíglas's core thesis, is that a pyrolysis system can be streamlined and optimised for carbon dioxide removal to lower cost, complexity and risk. Slíglas is preparing to launch a pilot facility which will prove out our approach and validate technology performance. From there, the plan is rapidly roll out larger scaled facilities to unlock the potential for biochar carbon removal in Ireland. Slíglas was winner of the InterTradeIreland 2025 Seedcorn competition in the Connacht/Leinster Deep tech category.

Words of advice for new start-ups

Focus on commercial traction as quickly as possible as it is really important to win over investors! It's also important to leverage all of the fantastic supports which are available within the Irish start-up ecosystem. A start-up can be daunting so having someone in your corner is a huge help!
