Discovering Cantabria: A Journey with the LOTTI Project

WestBIC is an Enterprise Ireland partner providing hands-on startup support, funding readiness and investment preparation for early-stage founders in the west of Ireland.

On April 17th, participants and stakeholders of the #LOTTI project gathered for the third Interregional Event in Cantabria, Spain. This occasion served as a platform for knowledge-sharing, mutual learning, and idea exchange, driving advancements within the LOTTI project.

Representatives from Finland, Spain, Poland, Ireland, France, and Italy convened in the charming city of Santander, nestled in northern Spain.

Our journey commenced with a visit to Torrelavega, where insightful discussions with OECD representatives at the Chamber of Commerce explored citizen engagement in decision-making regarding EU project funding.

We then toured the La Lechera Art Centre, currently undergoing transformation from a former milk powder factory into a vibrant hub for artistic expression. This revitalization honors the region’s heritage, showcasing a remarkable revival.

The following day, our exploration led us back to Torrelavega, where we visited a prominent public institution dedicated to providing training and job opportunities in the Besaya region. Here, we engaged with representatives from European and local administrations, exploring youth training programs and relishing dishes from the culinary training kitchen.

During the Stakeholders Good Practices presentations, each speaker showcased their initiatives, followed by discussions on ongoing activities, management updates, communication strategies, and scheduling the next LIM4 date in the steering committee meeting.

The highlight of our journey was the awe-inspiring visit to Cabárceno Natural Park, nestled within the Cantabrian mountains. This former industrial iron mine has transformed into a vast wildlife sanctuary, exemplifying sustainable tourism practices and environmental conservation. Spanning over 750 hectares, the park is home to diverse species from around the globe, providing spacious and natural habitats. Our visit left a lasting impression, witnessing majestic elephants, graceful giraffes, and playful chimpanzees in their lush enclosures.

As our journey concluded, we departed with enriching experiences and meaningful connections, highlighting the power of collaboration and the importance of preserving local identity amidst global initiatives.
