A new support programme to foster the development of the food sector in South Roscommon has been announced, which will be funded by Mid-South Roscommon Rural Development Company and is supported by other development agencies in the region.

This wide ranging programme of support aims to add value to local farm produce, encourage the establishment of new food enterprises as well as working with existing food companies to enhance their capacity and capability. In particular, strong emphasis will be placed on generating an appreciation of quality local food products in order to create a basis for the sustainable development of the food sector in the region.

As such, elements of the programme include:

• A range of information events and dissemination activities
• Programmes to add value to primary produce, including producer groups and other initiatives
• Workshops for the generation and development of new food ideas
• Support for the establishment of new food enterprises, including those based in rural communities
• Delivery of a dedicated food enterprise programme
• Work with existing food companies to enhance their competitiveness and innovation potential.

The delivery of the programme will be managed by WESTBIC, with inputs from selected food/marketing consultants and industry experts to ensure a comprehensive programme of support is provided.
