Introductory Training Programme for New Food Businesses in Roscommon

By James Donlon, January 9, 2007

A short introductory training programme has been organised for those interested in starting their own food business in County Roscommon as part of the Local Food Project developed by Roscommon LEADER and managed by WESTBIC. The training will take place over three evenings in Gleeson’s, Roscommon town, from 7-10pm each evening starting on Monday 22nd January. It is funded through the Accel Rural Food Company Training Network, designed to help rurally-based food producers and businesses to achieve growth, sustainability and competitiveness by providing training to owners, managers and staff.

The new programme is an ideal starting point for those interested in considering food production or starting a food-related business in the region. Topics covered will include food sector legislation, food safety and hygiene, HACCP principles, premises design for different foods businesses, product development and customer care aspects.

It is envisaged that follow-up training will be provided for interested participants to bring them along a successful development path towards setting up their own food business.

This training programme is part of the Local Food Initiative in Roscommon, which aims to foster an appreciation of local food in the region and to develop the local food sector through a range of activities. To date these activities have included a range of awareness programmes, idea generation and development sessions, support for farmer’s market projects and assistance to new and existing food businesses.
