The global phenomenon of the Start-Up Weekend has finally come to Galway. It took place over the weekend November 14, 15,16th at the Cairnes Business School at NUI, G. A sold out event, the enthusiasm and energy was infectious and WestBIC were delighted to support this Entrepreneurship Promotion and animation event as one of the main sponsors. The process is replicated around the world and a key component is for the ideas that mature in the Teams over the weekend to get to pitch their proposal to a judging panel and receive critique and some meaningful prizes. The winning pitch was FriendShipIT and their prize was a year`s free accommodation at the GTC! Notably, the promoters are from Argentina, which is great to see; the international context and reach of such an event. They will have the opportunity to compete further into next year in Regional Finals across the EU and depending on that result can go to a global competition and claim the ultimate prize. Organisers and mentors are all voluntary and are to be congratulated. Among them included John Breslin of NUI, G, Paul from ExOrdo and Tara from Mission Possible whom we know well here at the GTC. “I was delighted to note that I felt `old` there” commented Joe Greaney, WestBIC “it`s so encouraging to see so many young people now keenly interested in entrepreneurship”
